Capital Ideas

As part of our work with the Mill House Social Enterprise Accelerator program, we're encouraging social entrepreneurs and business mentors to get involved in the Capital Ideas initiative.

The Mill House is Canberra's first (and only) dedicated social enterprise accelerator.

As part of their work to support both 'for-profit' and 'non-for-profit' social ventures, Capital Ideas looks to bring together social entrepreneurs with volunteer business mentors, with funding available for the development of business plans.

For Social Entrepreneurs

Social entrepreneurs are change makers. They are individuals who see a gap in the fabric of their community, and they attempt to use trade (selling something to a customer) as a way to address it.

  • Do you live in the Capital Region?
  • Do you have an idea for a business that will trade for social, cultural, economic or environmental impact?
  • Do you have an idea of how your social ventures will make money?

Anyone can be a social entrepreneur - a university student, a retired business person, a community volunteer, farmer, a stay at home parent or carer. Many indigenous owned businesses are also social enterprises because of their distinctive community and cultural obligations.

For Business Mentors

With training and support from the University of Canberra, we will be asking our business mentors to work with a social entrepreneur over a period of time helping them to craft a business case. If you identify a project with exceptional promise, we want to know about it. Capital Ideas can reimburse up to the first $2,000 of expenses related to the development of a business case.

  • Do you live in the Capital Region?
  • Do you have at least 3 - 4 hours per week on average between now and 30 June 2018?
  • Do you have sufficient business or public sector experience in the development of business investment cases or funding proposals?
  • Are you able to attend a full day training seminar in Canberra on 17 November 2017?

Our business mentors should be well networked with an understanding of the key economic, social and cultural drivers in their city or town. They understand who the major players are and can use their personal networks and contacts to help assess the viability of the idea under consideration.

This all leads to the Mill House's mission to grow a high-quality pipeline of investible social ventures in the ACT and surrounding region for corporate, foundation and individual social impact investors.

What is a Social Enterprise?

If you're unfamiliar with the concept, Social Enterprises are businesses that:

  • are driven by a public or community cause, be it social, environmental, cultural or economic
  • derive most of their income from trade from customers on an open and competitive market, not donations, sponsorships or grants, and
  • use the majority (at least 50%) of their profits to work towards their social mission.

So if you are a social entrepreneur wanting to make a difference or you would like to lend your business acumen to a socially-conscious business sector, get involved in Capital Ideas today!
